Fragments of some of Fra Elias catechesis

“Do not come for me…” tirelessly repeats Fra Elia “it is not I who heals! It is He who listens to you and loves you! Open your heart to the ‘love of God… ask, and He will help you!… Know how to love, forgive and forget… Do as He has taught us… He has never betrayed you… we do!… I for you can only pray!… Let us pray also for those we do not know, for our enemies, for those who do not know God… We are all brothers, all His children… He loves us all equally! Peace and good to all.” As a wise old man says, “You cannot stop the water flowing”.

“I am a preacher come to speak to you to shake your hearts. I am like you, equal to you, a child of God like you. Perhaps I have an extra step because the Lord has sent me, a pilgrim in the world and for the world. Life is a gift from God. Young people must learn to deal with it and love it. They must know from an early age, from their parents, that life is hard and that everything must be conquered with God’s help. This helps a lot especially not to demand what cannot be had. Do not close the door to the Lord out of pride, haughtiness, arrogance. Remain innocent–innocence must remain first.

Let us strip naked before him and tell the Lord the truth. He will understand us and help us. Unfortunately in this world it is always the innocent who pay–let us pray for them. Let us pray for the families of the sick, the imprisoned, the migrants. We pray for the couples separated at home–that they will be reunited. We pray for families without peace and in difficulty. We pray for abandoned children. We pray for those who have no children and desire them.
